Update: 12 Man Pitching Staff Battle Royal

They are flying over the ropes fast and furious now.  Gone are Marc Rzepczynski, David Purcey and Jesse Carlson which leaves 14 arms vying for 12 spots.

Rotation Candidates:
Shaun Marcum
Ricky Romero
Brandon Morrow
Brian Tallet
Dana Eveland
Brett Cecil

Bullpen Candidates:
Jason Frasor
Scott Downs
Kevin Gregg
Shawn Camp
Jeremy Accardo
Casey Janssen
Josh Roenicke
Merkin Valdez

Analysis:

The injury to Rzep couldn't have come at a worse time.  A day after sending down two lefty relievers, the club may have to recall one of them.  Unless of course they choose to start the year with either Eveland or Tallet in the bullpen.  But they will need a second lefty down there to help Downs out.

Another issue to consider is Brandon Morrow.  He remains a little behind the other starters in terms of innings pitched this spring due to the fact he was shut down with right shoulder tightness.  He may need a few more innings pitched before he is ready to join the rotation.

Brian Tallet is going to get the start today against the Evil Empire at 1:05 in Dunedin.  His role will be determined after the game so I assume he will be pitching his heart out.  The results of the game will dictate where he begins the year, in either the bullpen or rotation.  Tough break for him drawing the powerhouse Yanks with so much on the line.

Right now, this is a tough one to call.  We need to cut two more pitchers from the list above.  Who do you think they will be?
